Are you ready to attain freedom this Independence Day?

Updated: Jun 8, 2023

Happy to celebrate 73rd Independence Day, a proud moment for all Indians as we won the freedom fight against Britishers on 15th Aug 1957. But what about the evils that have trapped us in confinement and enslaved us like never before?

The fight against Britishers who had taken control over our country was not an easy one, but the fight against the evils that have imprisoned us, is yet more tough. These evils have become a part of us; in fact the irony is that we do not even see them as an external force empowering us. Hence, no question about even thinking of overcoming them.

That’s where the actual problem is. We have accepted these evils and assumed that they are a must for our existence; that life is not possible without them and hence allowing them to grow and nurture within us without realizing the harm they are doing to us. Now is the high time we start recognizing these evils and take control over them.

This Independence Day, lets free ourselves from all these evils and celebrate true Independence!

Lust : A psychological force creating intense longing for an object, or circumstance fulfilling the emotion. It can be the lust for sexuality, love, money or power. As they say, anything & everything in access is harmful. Same goes for the longing for anything. Till the time the longing is within limit and as much as its necessary for existence, its acceptable, but once it crosses that threshold and falls into the category of lust, it makes the mind and body malicious.

Wrath : Feelings of anger, rage or hatred and its reflection in the behavior of an individual is quite a common scene these days. Creating anger and frustration on minor issues without thinking is becoming a trend of life. A common belief system being built that if something is not happening your way or someone is not behaving your way, anger is justified and is the only way to get things done in the way you want. Uncontrolled flow of such emotions is creating unwanted situations for all, not only for the one who is displaying these emotions but also the one who is at the receiving end.

Greed : Unquenchable desire for material gain, be it food, money, status, power, etc. Desire to accumulate as much as possible even though one needs a fraction of it for lading a happy life, leads to unfulfilled aspirations and which in turn leads to aggression and frustration in behavior; and ultimately a chaotic and disturbed mind and body, which will not be able to do the justification to the relationships one has.

Attachment : Love and affection for worldly things and relations. Attachment can be to anything but is mostly within the realms of people & things. One of the main reasons for all our worries is attachment to material possessions, position, status, friends, relatives, etc. etc. Because of the attachment to these worldly things, sometimes we even end up doing acts which are not called for and not good karma. But we fail to realize that none of these is going to accompany us forever, rather the good deeds we do as human being will be carried forward with us in the long run.

Ego : An inflated feeling of pride in one’s superiority to others. Once gripped with this feeling, the outlook towards the rest of the world changes and so does the behavior towards all. This not only affects the state of mind of the one who possesses it but also impacts association with all others, creating an overall negative environment. Most of the times, Ego “or Abhimaan” is often confused with Self-respect “or Swabhimaan”. There is a very thin line between the two, but one needs to be really cautious to identify the difference. Where on one hand, ‘Swabhimaan’ gives you a strong base to lead a happy life, ‘Abhimaan’ can disrupt an ongoing happy life.

If we really want to enjoy the Independence that the Nation attained because of the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, each individual needs to fight the above five evils within themselves and get the true freedom from the negativity that they create.
