How do you deal with Work Pressure?

Corporate jobs that are known for high salaries at one end are equally known for the associated pressure on the other end. The pressure that flows from top to bottom with a varying magnitude impacts one and all at various level of hierarchy. With the progression in seniority, surges not only the salary but also the pressure. It wouldn’t be inappropriate to say that the hike in salary is not just for the work that one is supposed to handle but also for the talent to cope with stress and pressure absorbency skills.


For a person at a senior level, there will always be challenges pertaining to performance, team management, returns, finances and many more. They are 'on stage' all day with high expectations from everyone around them. There will always be a group of directors, investors, stakeholders and management teams expecting great performance and the team members working closely with them who will be gazing with the expectation of support and guidance. Their role is quite demanding which leaves them struggling hard to find space for themselves and their family. Of course it is not a very favorable position as an individual, as it means lot of sacrifices at personal and family front.


An ideal boss is one who leads by example. Setting up a good example is what motivates the team more than anything else. And only a motivated team can deliver to the best of its efficiency. Passing on the stress coming from top management to the team without any filter not just increases the stress but also demotivates the team below hampering their productivity, as they are the ones who are actually responsible for the execution. Diluting the team’s motivation due to regular stress is sure to impact the efficiency. That does not really mean that pressure should be kept to oneself all the time, but “When”, “How” and “How much” pressure to be disseminated further within the team, needs to be well managed.


Showing agitated behavior, shouting and screaming in front of the entire staff shows an incompetency to deal with the work pressure. There are other ways as well to deal with the pressure and passing on the pressure to your team. Work pressure with a sense of responsibility is generally happily accepted. Moreover, in case of any differences with the team, it is always a healthier practice to resolve them in person without making a high end drama out of it in front of the entire staff.


Not to deny, attaining a senior position is not that difficult as it is to maintain it; being in good books with own seniors and at the same time keeping your team happy and in your stride while delivering upto the expectations of one’s position & profile is a real challenge.
